Bangladesh Bans Plastic Bags Again
Bangladesh has reintroduced its ban on polyethylene bags to address worsening environmental pollution, renewing hopes for the adoption of the eco-friendly Sonali bag. Developed by Bangladeshi scientist Dr. Mubarak Ahmed Khan, these biodegradable bags are made from jute, a crop abundant in the country. This initiative aligns with Bangladesh’s broader efforts to combat the harmful effects of plastic waste, which has polluted rivers, clogged drains, and damaged marine ecosystems. While the ban was initially introduced years ago, enforcement had waned, leading to a resurgence of plastic use. The renewed focus reflects growing environmental consciousness and the potential for innovation-driven solutions. However, challenges remain, including scaling up production and ensuring affordability to replace plastics in everyday use
