New Delhi, August 24, 2026: National Security Adviser Ajit Doval is heading to Beijing for a significant round of India-China talks, putting the long-running boundary dispute back at the centre of diplomatic engagement between Asia’s two largest powers.

Doval is scheduled to meet Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi for the 25th round of Special Representatives talks on the India-China boundary question. The discussions come at a particularly important moment, weeks before the BRICS Leaders’ Summit scheduled in India in September.

The Special Representatives mechanism is one of the highest-level channels established by India and China to address their unresolved boundary dispute. Despite multiple rounds of negotiations over the years, the two countries still do not have a mutually agreed and demarcated border.

Relations between New Delhi and Beijing deteriorated sharply following the military confrontation along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh beginning in 2020. Since then, diplomatic and military-level negotiations have sought to reduce tensions and restore stability along the frontier.

The latest meeting therefore carries significance beyond the boundary question itself.

BRICS Adds Diplomatic Weight

The timing is particularly noteworthy because Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to travel to India for the BRICS summit scheduled for September 12–13, although Beijing has yet to formally announce the visit.

A successful round of talks between Doval and Wang could help create a more favourable environment for engagement between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Xi.

India and China have gradually attempted to stabilise their relationship after years of tensions. The challenge for both governments is determining whether improvements in diplomatic engagement can translate into sustainable progress on the border.

Last year’s Special Representatives talks resulted in both sides reaffirming the 2005 agreement on the political parameters and guiding principles for settling the boundary question. An expert group was subsequently established to explore progress on boundary delimitation, while mechanisms for maintaining peace along the LAC have continued.

More Than a Border Conversation

The relationship between India and China extends far beyond their territorial disagreements.

The two countries are major trading partners, influential members of BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, and increasingly important players in determining the geopolitical balance of the Global South.

At the same time, strategic competition, border security concerns and competing regional interests continue to complicate relations.

Doval’s Beijing visit is therefore unlikely to produce an immediate solution to a dispute that has persisted for decades. Its importance instead lies in keeping high-level dialogue active and potentially establishing the political groundwork for broader engagement.

With the BRICS summit approaching, the outcome of the Beijing discussions will be closely watched for indications of whether India and China are entering a more stable phase in their complicated bilateral relationship.
