According to the latest assessment by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), India’s nuclear inventory has grown to approximately 190 warheads, up from 180 last year. For the first time, twelve warheads are believed to be in an operationally deployed state rather than being held solely in reserve stockpiles.

The report reflects India’s continued efforts to modernize its strategic deterrence capabilities amid evolving regional security dynamics. Defence experts note that such developments are part of broader modernization trends seen among several nuclear powers, including China, Pakistan, Russia and the United States.
